You know security is critical to your business, and you may already have alarms or cameras in place in your facility to protect it. But in some cases, this may not be enough. If you have a large area to protect, you may need to know if there is an unauthorized breach of your property long before anyone attempts to access your main building.
Whether you have valuable assets to protect, people on your property who you do not wish to be put in danger, or you just feel that by the time someone has reached one of the buildings on your property, it's way too late to be alerted to the breach. That's why you will want to look into putting a perimeter intrusion system in place.
Types of Businesses That Can Benefit From Perimeter Security Systems
Any business or institution that has a significant amount of property that is impossible to fully police using conventional alarms or cameras can benefit from perimeter intrusion detection systems. Examples include schools, farms, research parks or construction sites. When you need to know right away if there is a breach, you need perimeter security in addition to whatever other alarms, surveillance cameras or other systems you may have in place.
How to Prevent Perimeter Intrusion
You can try several methods to prevent perimeter intrusion, including fences, which can be made of a variety of materials. Your fence can also include barbed wire, cameras — possibly mounted on drones — and motion sensors.
For more complete protection, many companies are opting for Distributing Acoustic Sensing (DAS)-based Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems (PIDS). DAS is a type of motion-sensing technology that detects intruders when they attempt to breach a given perimeter and alerts the necessary authorities immediately.
Types of Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems
If you opt for a DAS-based PIDS system, you'll have to consider four different types of systems to find the one that would best suit your specific needs. They are:
- Fence Intrusion Detection System: Also called a barrier-mounted system, this is one of the most common types of perimeter security systems that includes some kind of fence, which a DAS cable or similar motion-sensing technology is attached to. The advantage of this system is that you can make it very difficult for the intruder to get in while at the same time being alerted to the issue, so you can deal with it immediately.
- Below Ground or Ground-Based Detection System: In this system, a DAS cable or other motion sensing technology is buried underneath the ground around the perimeter you wish to protect. The advantage of this system is that you do not need to invest in a physical barrier. You may also find it easier to catch potential intruders, if that is your goal, as they may be unaware that they have failed in breaching your property undetected.
- Free-Standing Perimeter Detection System: This is similar to the below-ground system, except that the motion sensors are mounted above the ground. Potential intruders may or may not notice the system, but you will be alerted to potential breaches without having to invest in either a physical barrier or installing a cable underground.
- Rapidly Deployable Perimeter Detection System: These types of systems are for when the area or property you need to protect can move. They are used most commonly for military applications.
